These gorgeous translucent red white heart glass beads were handmade in Ghana, Africa (also known as the Gold Coast). This style was invented around 1480. Red glass was colored using actual gold so the bead makers had to use it sparingly. They used a cheaper color to fill the core of the bead with red being used for the outer layer only. Green was used from 1480 to 1830 and in 1830, it was switched to either yellow or white with a translucent red coat. Around 1860, they stopped using yellow and only used white. These are some of the most beautiful beads I've ever seen!
Being handmade, bead size varies from approximately 8-9mm wide by 7-8mm thick. Bead hole is about 2.5mm. (These are a little bigger than previous lots.) FOUR (4) old African glass trade beads per package.
